The Vail Recreation District's 2017 La Sportiva Vail Trail Running Series, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, continues Aug. 26 with the 5K and 10K@10,000 Feet trail running race. Both races, presented by Summit Ford, will begin at 8 a.m. at the top of Gondola One at Mid-Vail on Vail Mountain, with the entire race taking place above 9,000 feet. The average grade of the 10K is 7% with an elevation gain of nearly 1,200 feet, while the shorter 5K is less challenging and will allow runners the chance to experience racing at an impressive altitude. Ask someone about Brazilian jazz and the likely response is bossa nova and “The Girl from Ipanema.” The 1964 recording was a smash hit for Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto and American saxophonist Stan Getz and it propelled the bossa nova sound to world-wide popularity. Ipanema is a toney beach neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro and the lyrics of the song tell the story of a tall, tan, young and lovely girl who sways like a samba when she walks to the sea. ( more)

For the first time in 26 years, a solar eclipse will pass over Vail and Beaver Creek on August 21, 2017. According to Eclipse2017.org, Vail will see 92% of the solar eclipse from 10:21 AM to 1:11 PM, creating a once in a lifetime adventure in the mountains. The solar eclipse is the first total eclipse visible only in the USA since 1776. ( more)
The Vail Recreation District's fourth annual KEEN Family Mud Run will take place Saturday, Aug. 12 in Vail, Colo. as part of the 2017 Vail Kids Adventure Games presented by Toyota. The KEEN Family Mud Run is open to all ages and is the perfect opportunity for those who are too young or too old to participate in the Kids A.G., but still want to join in on the activities. ( more)
Dr. Michael Davison has been to Cuba 40 times. Like Cubanismo frontman Jesús Alemañy, he is a mastermind on the trumpet and has played for decades. Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Ensemble at the University of Richmond, Davison can emulate just about any of history’s trumpet-playing heroes. But there’s something about Alemañy’s style that he simply can’t nail. ( more)
Bravo! Vail and the New York Philharmonic have announced a five-year extension of the Orchestra’s annual summer residency through the summer of 2022. The Philharmonic has been performing at Bravo! Vail since 2003. ( more)
