December 6, 2006 (Vail, Colo.) -The sixth annual Teva Mountain Games will return to Vail, Colorado May 30-June 3. In 2007, the Mountain Games will position itself as the pioneering event for the organic action sports movement and a platform to grow the exposure, appeal and participation in human-powered, environmentally friendly, outdoor sports.
"The term 'organic actions sports' encompasses all of the competition and lifestyle featured at the Mountain Games," states Joel Heath, president of Mountain Games, LLC. "As our society increasingly emphasizes healthy lifestyles, the outdoor industry has a perfect opportunity to grow the mainstream appeal of active lifestyle sports like kayaking, mountain biking and rock climbing. In order to fuel overall growth, the outdoor industry must embrace events that can attract a non-endemic market."
"The core action sports - skateboarding, BMX, Motorcross, snowboarding and surfing - have reached a broad mainstream audience through major events with strong corporate support," states Heath. "The Mountain Games is an ideal platform to broaden the audience for organic action sports, one that gives both amateur and professional athletes a chance to compete, and an opportunity for people to try out these sports for the first time."
In 2006, over 1,400 athletes competed in 20 different paddling, biking and climbing events at the Mountain Games. Over 25,000 spectators participated in the five-day festival. In addition to the competitions, the event features a comprehensive interactive expo and demo area with kayak pools, climbing walls, mountain biking courses and clinics offered by some of the world's top athletes.
"In 2007 we will introduce the heroes of adventure sports to a mainstream audience," states Heath. "There are some amazing achievements and personalities in the organic action sports world and we intend to tell those stories to more people."
The prize purse for the 2007 Teva Mountain Games will be the biggest to date with $100,000 cash up for grabs to attract the biggest names in organic action sports. The athletes and their stories will be highlighted in a national multi-media marketing campaign with extensive print, television and online coverage.
Another objective of the 2007 Teva Mountain Games will be to increase accessibility to adventure sports. To that end, organizers have created Vail's Organic Family Adventure Weekend Series, an eco-adventure resort-camp that allows families to learn how to kayak, climb, raft, mountain bike, track wildlife and fly-fish together in a mountain setting. Launching on the Mountain Games weekend of June 1-3, families will have the opportunity to purchase a family adventure package including lodging, instruction, a family adventure dinner and Mountain Games Adventure Gear.
