Vail HillClimb 2010
A runner nears the finish during the 2010 La Sportiva Vail HillClimb.
(Vail)-The Vail Recreation District's (VRD) 2011 La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running Series continues Sunday (7/3) with the 35th running of the La Sportiva Vail HillClimb. Named best trail running race by Colorado Runner in 2006, the HillClimb will test local, regional and national runners with a 7.5 mile climb from Vail Village to Vail Mountain's summit, a gain of 2,500 vertical feet. The race begins at 8 a.m. in Vail Village on the paved road adjacent to Vail's Mountain Haus and ascends on gravel trails taking runners to the finish line at Eagle's Nest. The HillClimb is presented by the Vail Mountain Haus and is the third race of the 2011 La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running Series, which is presented by Suunto.

Individual race costs are $28 for preregistration or $38 on race-day. Registration is available by clicking here or by calling 970-479-2280. Racers should park in Vail Village parking structure where parking is free for the summer. Day of registration will occur at the race starting area until 7:45 a.m. The Eagle Bahn Gondola in LionsHead will operate from 8 to 9 a.m. for race-day spectators and will be free. Spectators are encouraged to park in the LionsHead parking structure where parking is also free for the summer. The gondola also will be free for race participants and spectators to download following the race.

Additionally, the Vail HillClimb is part of the La Sportiva Mountain Cup running series, which features 10 of the best trail races in the country. Throughout the season, racers compete across the country and total their score for their best five races as they vie for a $25,000 prize purse. Scoring is based on the racer's finishing position; the closer to first place, the higher the score. "Having the HillClimb be part of the Mountain Cup is sure to bring some of the nation's elite runners to Vail for this weekend's race," said VRD running race director Marc Thomas. "This weekend's race will give runners of all abilities a chance to rub elbows with some amazing runners, while they celebrate the July 4th weekend and an iconic trail running race."

Vail HillClimb 2010 Couple Finishing
Runners celebrate the finish during the 2010 La Sportiva Vail HillClimb.
The La Sportiva Series continues July 24 when runners will test themselves during the La Sportiva Vail Half Marathon, which is actually longer than a half marathon at just over 14 miles. The fifth event, the La Sportiva 10k and 5k at 10,000 Feet will be held on Aug. 7 with runners riding the Eagle Bahn Gondola to the race start area. The entire race is run above 9,000 feet with high points above 10,000 feet. The Berry Picker trail run follows on Aug. 28 and will take runners 3.2 miles up a tough single track from the base of Vail Mountain to the top at Eagle's Nest. The final race of the series, the La Sportiva Evergold 10k and 5k on Sept. 11, will begin at the Vail Golf Club and traverse Vail Mountain back to the golf club where racers will enjoy an end-of-season brunch at Happy Valley Grill.

Prizes will be presented to the top three finishers of each age group at each race, with series prizes awarded to the top three finishers who compete in at least five events. Raffle prize drawings also will be held at each awards ceremony featuring products from area merchants and national companies. Volunteers Sought for the Divas Half Marathon at Vail on Aug. 21
The Divas Half Marathon™ at Vail, scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 21, is seeking a handful of runners who are willing to walk/run the course at a 16 minute, per mile pace to help slower runners finish the race. Volunteers are needed to run at a non-competitive pace and have enthusiasm to cheer those falling behind into a brisker pace so they are not caught by the SAG crew. Volunteers will receive a free entry into the race and enjoy all the perks that go along with the race, including receiving a tiara, glass of champagne, medal, T-shirt and more at the end of the race.

In addition, nearly 200 volunteers are needed to assist a variety of race-day functions including at water stations, food stations, as course marshals, bike crews, SAG crew, gear check, finish line activities, parking, starting assistants and more. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and a goody-bag for their help.

The Divas Half Marathon™ at Vail race weekend festivities will include a Health and Fitness Boutique, receptions, parties and a post-race "Diva-style" Pub Crawl. Race day will begin at 8:45 a.m. with the Girls 5K followed by the Divas Half Marathon™ at 9 a.m. in Ford Park on Aug. 21. The race also will have entertainment on the course and special Divas stops like the feather boa station and tiara stop, an ageless category for those not wanting to divulge their age and a dance party. Cost to run the Vail Divas Half Marathon™ is $90 per runner. The Girls 5k cost $25 per person. All Divas Half Marathon™ participants receive a finishing medal, personalized racing bibs and a one-of-a-kind women's-fit technical T-shirt.
