The Vail Recreation District is inviting figure skating enthusiasts to participate in a skating clinic that will feature instruction on loops, flip jumps and more with former Russian National Team Head Coach Edouard Pliner and 2014 Winter Olympic hopeful Elene Gedevanishvili. The clinic is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13 at Dobson Ice Arena and cost $35, which includes on-ice and off-ice instruction.  
"We're thrilled to offer this unique opportunity to our local and visiting figure skaters," said Dobson Ice Arena Manager Jared Biniecki. "We understand this is short notice but it's too good of an opportunity to miss."
Pliner coached the Russian National Team from 1952 to 1992 and has 48 years of coaching experience, the last 15 years spent in the U.S. He has coached Olympic, World, European, Junior World and National medalists including 1994 Winter Olympics gold medalist and 1993 World Champion Oksana Baiul, 1988 Winter Olympics gold medalist Natalia Bestemianova, 1984 Winter Olympics bronze medalist Kira Ivanova, 1984 World Championships silver medalist Anna Kondrasheva, 1989 and 1990 European Championships silver medalist Natalia Lebedeva, 1981 World Junior Championships silver medalist Yuriy Bureika and 1992 World Junior Championships silver medalist Konstantin Kostin. He also worked with the national teams of Holland, Croatia, Germany and Austria. Pliner was awarded the prestigious Gold Pin from the International Professional Skating Union and is among a few elite coaches qualified to be considered Honorable Coach of Russia. Pliner holds a Master of Sports Science and Master of Sport.
Gedevanishvili is the first skater from Georgia (the country) to medal at an International Skating Union Championships winning a bronze at the 2010 European Championships. She also won the 2005 Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating. She left Moscow to train in the U.S. in 2006 and is currently being coached by former U.S. Olympian Brian Orser who won silver medals during the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics. Gedevanishvili participated in 2010 and 2012 Olympics and is competing to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
