(Vail)--NBA All-Star Sidney Moncrief and his award winning staff will return to the Vail Valley July 25-28 to coach the Vail Recreation District's (VRD) annual Back-2-Basics All-Star Basketball Academy. This is the fifth year Moncrief has taught the VRD camp and new this summer, Moncrief has added a Shooting Camp to accelerate participant's basketball shooting skills. Camps take place at Berry Creek Middle School in Edwards, Colo., with details as follows:
- The Back-2-Basic's All-Star Basketball Academy is for ages six and older and will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Academy will help players learn new skills while building on the fundamentals of shooting, passing, dribbling, footwork and defense. Cost is $145 per player.
- The new Shooting Camp, for children ages 10 and older, will emphasize shooting technique improvement to give participants and edge needed in a competitive basketball environment. Camp instruction will focus on individual shot mechanic analysis and a corrective action plan, form shooting instruction and training, progressive shooting practices and competitions; as well as shooting charts with effective tracking systems. The shooting camp will follow the Back-2-Basics All-Star Basketball Academy from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and cost is $140 per participant.
Moncrief is well-known for taking the Arkansas Razorbacks to the Final Four in 1978 and then achieving all-star status in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks. He earned Defensive Player of the Year twice as a player and has coached several teams in the NBA, plus has 20 years of clinic experience. According to Moncrief, he looks forward to coming to the Vail Valley each summer to help elevate the basketball skills of local and visiting youth. "I'm always excited to conduct the basketball camps in Vail," said Moncreif. "We're excited to add the shooting clinic as it's a new basketball training concept that benefits all basketball players. Participants at both camps always gain additional skills and confidence in basketball play." In addition to the basketball academy and shooting camp, the VRD is offering two more sports camps round out the summer sports camp lineup. The TetraBrazil Soccer Academy will return for the second summer Aug. 1-5 for ages seven to 16. The soccer academy will bring Brazilian soccer expertise to campers who will learn first-hand the kind of soccer training that has made Brazil one of the most successful soccer nations in the world. Then, Aug. 8-12, the VRD will end its summer sports camp season with the new Skyhawks Flag Football Camp for ages seven to 14. The flag football camp will teach core skills of passing, catching, de-flagging and defensive positioning. Costs for the soccer academy is $153 for a half day, or $193 for a full day and $150 for the flag football camp.
