Saline, MI - Anthem Sports of Cambridge, NY - organizers of the Tour of the Battenkill - announce a new national Pro/Am series of classic cycling events throughout the USA. The new ‘Great American Cycling Series’ includes events in New York, Michigan, and Colorado for 2011.
The 2011 series began with last week’s Tour of the Battenkill – America’s largest sanctioned one-day road race, and continues on May 14 with the Tour of Washtenaw in Saline, MI. Both of these early season events are epic, ‘Classics-style’, one-day road races with significant portions of the course on dirt roads. The 7th Annual Tour of the Battenkill – founded in 2005 - drew more than 2500 amateurs and professionals on April 10 in New York State. The Tour of Washtenaw, to be held near Ann Arbor in Washtenaw County, expects a similar growth as the Tour of the Battenkill. Racers interested in participating in the Tour of Washtenaw event may use coupon code ‘GREATAMERICAN’ to receive $25 off registration. See www.tourofwashtenaw.com for details. Two other confirmed events for 2011 – the Tour of Vail and the Tour of the Catskills– are to be held July 16 and August 5-7, respectively. The Vail, Colorado event is a criterium on the cobbled streets of downtown Vail Village, while the Catskills event is a stage race that includes the famed ‘Devil’s Kitchen’ climb made famous by the Tour de Trump in the early 1990’s. An additional event in the Adirondack Mountains of New York is expected to be announced soon for September, 2011.
Events in other regions are expected to be added in 2012, including the Southeast and Northwest US. A national sponsor is expected to be named for 2012 and will support a series prize lists for both professionals and amateurs.
