(Vail)-A variety of youth sports camps are scheduled this month with the Vail Recreation District (VRD) including lacrosse, beach volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, martial arts, tennis, sports training, golf, basketball and skateboarding. Also, just announced, the VRD will host a special girl's session during the Bob Johnson Hockey School at Dobson Ice Arena. The session will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. July 18-22 and cost $100. The session is open to girl's ages 10 and younger who have one year of skating experience. Call 970-479-2271 for details.

Returning for its second summer, this beach volleyball camp is for players who are looking to either learn the sport of beach volleyball or improve their skills. Players will be grouped according to ability with a maximum of 10 players per coach. The camp will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. for grades nine through 12th and cost is $125 per player. Grades six through eight will play from 1 to 3 p.m. and cost is $75 per player.

Athletes will learn the fundamentals of stick handling, cradling, passing and shooting in a fun, non-checking environment. Participants also will learn life skills such as respect, teamwork and discipline. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and cost $130. Rental equipment is available at an additional cost.

Join former Battle Mountain State Champion and Division 1 Northeastern University CAA Player of the Year Britney Brown for an exciting two-day camp. Camp will include fun and active opportunities to learn everything from basic skills to high level drills. All camps take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $109 per participant. An additional camp is scheduled for Aug. 13-14.

Challenger British Soccer brings professional coaches from England will teach participants ball skills, passing, shooting and offensive and defensive techniques. Cost are $175 for a full day, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; $135 for a half day, 9 a.m. to noon; or $99 for ages four to five for lessons from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Children must be eight years or older to attend the full day session.  

Vail Gymnastics Camp

These week-long summer camps are for children ages five and older and will not only include gymnastics, but also outdoor adventures such as hiking, visiting local parks and excursions to Dobson Ice Arena, Vail Nature Center and more. Children will be grouped according to age and skill level. Camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and cost is $175 per camper. Camps are also scheduled for Aug. 15-19 and Aug. 22-26.

Returning for its second summer, the VRD will offer Martial Arts Children's Karate and Safety Camps for ages five to 12. The camps will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and are a great way to introduce children to, or increase their knowledge of, all aspects of martial arts. These holistic programs blend major Japanese, Korean, Chinese and American martial arts with the national award-winning Alert Kids Kidnap Prevention program. With 30 years experience teaching and empowering children, instructor Mathew Bayley, Master of the Martial Arts, is offering a well-rounded program that develops self-discipline, self-respect, and gives each child the tools and ability to keep themselves safe when you are not around. The final camp is scheduled for Aug. 8-12.

The Tennis Center will offer four weeks of Youth Tennis Camps for ages five to teens. Costs are $160 for VRD residents and $185 for guests. Camps will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. In addition, junior tennis lessons take place throughout the summer with a ratio of six students per coach. Lessons are from 9 to 10 a.m. for ages five to six, 10 to 11 a.m. for ages seven to nine, 11 a.m. to noon for ages 10 to 12 and noon to 1 p.m. for ages 13 to 17. Tennis camps are also scheduled for Aug. 1-5 and Aug. 8-12.

This multi-sport program will give children ages four to seven a positive first step into athletics. The camp will include learning the essentials of baseball, basketball and soccer in a safe and fun environment. Campers also will explore balance, movement, hand-eye coordination and skill development. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon and cost $130.

The Vail Golf Club will be offering five sessions of three-day PAR and Birdie camps late June through early August. These programs cost $85 per session and are for children ages six to 17. The final junior camp will take place Aug. 2-4.

Participants will be led by U.S. women's silver medal winning Olympic team coach and 1980 Olympic gold medal winner Mark Johnson and his qualified staff for a week-long camp to improve on-ice skills and game playing techniques. Costs are $420 for Eagle County residents, $400 for Vail residents, $445 for outside guests or $175 for the goalie camp. VRD Back-to-Basics All-Star Basketball Academy      | July 25-28   |   Registration   | 970-479-2280  |  Ages 6 and Older   |   Berry Creek Middle School Participants will be coached by former NBA All-Star, All-Pro Sydney Moncrief and his award winning staff during this four-day camp, which will concentrate on learning new skills while building on the fundamentals of shooting, passing, dribbling, footwork and defense. Camp will emphasize shooting technique improvement to give participants an edge needed in a competitive basketball environment. Instruction will focus on individual shot mechanic analysis and a corrective action plan; form shooting instruction and training; progressive shooting practices and competitions; as well as shooting charts with effective tracking systems.Camp takes place from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and cost is $140. In addition to the Vail Junior Golf Program, the Youth Foundation's First Tee of Eagle County offers a variety of summer programs, many of which take place at the Vail Golf Club. The Youth Foundation First Tee of Eagle County offers PAR, Birdie, Player's League and Girls Night Out programs.

Learn to skateboard at the Vail Skatepark with instructors who teach everything from basic skills and etiquette to perfecting a boardslide or kickflip. Skateboarding classes take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, beginning June 15. Costs per clinic are $20 for VRD residents and $25 Eagle County residents. Purchase five sessions and costs are $15 for VRD residents and $20 for Eagle County residents. Skateboards and helmets required, wrist guards and knee pads recommended.

The VRD also has a variety of camps scheduled in August summer including soccer, golf, tennis, martial arts, flag football and volleyball.
