(Vail)- The La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running series continues Sunday (8-26) with 10k@10,000 Feet trail running race and the second annual 5k@10,000 Feet. Both races begin at 9 a.m. at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola at Eagle's Nest on Vail Mountain and take place entirely above 9,000 feet above sea level, with the high point at nearly 11,000 feet. The average grade of the 10k is 7 percent with an elevation gain of 1,172 feet, while the shorter 5k is less challenging and will allow runners the chance to experience racing at such an impressive altitude. Both races will end at Eagle's Nest at the top of the mountain.
The Eagle Bahn Gondola in LionsHead will operate from 8 to 9 a.m. for racers and race-day spectators. All racers should take the gondola up no later than 8:30 a.m. Racers should park in the LionsHead parking structure where parking is free for the summer. Registration is available by clicking here. Day-of registration will occur at the race starting area from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the base of the Eagle Bahn Gondola in LionsHead. Bib pick-up will be available from 2 to 5 p.m. at Christy Sports in Vail Village. Scott McClarrinon will be taking race-action photos of runners, and photos of other VRD 2012 sports events are available by clicking here.
The final race of the La Sportiva Trail Running Series, which was named best series by Colorado Runner magazine in 2005 and 2008, will take place at 10 a.m. on Sept. 16 and features the La Sportiva Evergold 10k and 5k. The Evergold will begin and end at the Vail Golf Club featuring a course that will take runners nearly all the way to LionsHead via single track trails and then back to the golf club. An end-of-season party will also take place after the race featuring a free brunch for racers.
Prizes will be presented to the top three finishers of each age group at each race, with series prizes awarded to the top three finishers who compete in at least five events. Raffle prize drawings also will be held at each awards ceremony featuring products from area merchants and national companies.
