Raphael Saadiq to Headline with Featured Artistis Liv Warfield and Jonathan B

VAIL, Colo.--April 14, 2010--Vail Soul Music Fest, the first-ever soul music themed event to appear in the state of Colorado, will debut in Vail during the weekend of August 20–22, 2010 with confirmed artists to date including headliner Raphael Saadiq, along with Liv Warfield and Jonathan Bryant.

Vail Soul Music Fest was selected as only one of two new events to receive funding by the Commission on Special Events. Dave Chapin, Chairperson of the Commission on Special Events explains, “We felt this new music festival will expand Vail’s live music scene and strongly meets our criteria for funding events, including positively impacting Vail’s sense of community, having a high potential for growth and the development of sponsorships and media exposure and ultimately delivering a high estimated return on our investment.  We are very excited to help bring this new and unique music festival to Vail.”
Thanks to the support of the Town of Vail and Commission on Special events, Vail Soul Music Fest is excited to make Vail its home this summer and many more to come. Vail Soul Music Fest, formerly known as Colorado Soul Fest, changed its name to align more with the Town of Vail.
“We are excited to partner with the Town of Vail on a festival of this nature, which is unique to Colorado,” says Rhonda Jackson, President of Legacy Entertainment Inc., and executive founder of Vail Soul Music Fest. “Music lovers from all walks of life will have the opportunity to experience true artistry in the perfect atmosphere.”
Vail Soul Music Fest will introduce a weekend-long showcase of up-and-coming independent soul music artists, as well as feature the most well-known, headlining, soul music veterans of our time, including Raphael Saadiq. Founded by longtime Colorado resident, Rhonda Jackson, the Fest is far more than just another music festival. Jackson explains, “While we are elated to present Vail residents and visitors with mind-blowing, live music performances, the Vail Soul Music Fest is different from any other music festival in the region. Vail Soul Music Fest is committed to bringing music lovers from around the world to the mountain’s natural amphitheater.”
From Raphael Saadiq’s early days as a member of multi-platinum R&B innovators Tony! Toni! Tone!, to his work as a Grammy Award-winning producer for the likes of Mary J. Blige, D'Angelo, Earth, Wind & Fire, John Legend, Joss Stone and Macy Gray, Raphael Saadiq has always been a chameleon and a trailblazer. A modern-day blend of '60s soul and R&B's old-school roots, his two solo albums have garnered a combined eight Grammy nomination further heightening Saadiq's respect amongst his peers and solidifying his status as one of modern music's most dynamic talents. Leading up to his performance at Vail Soul Music Fest, Raphael will be appearing at the UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival, Capital Jazz Fest in Maryland and Chicago’s Lollapalooza.
Nominated for “Best New Artists” on Soultrack Awards in 2008, Liv Warfield has one of the most promising voices in alternative R&B soul today and has paid her dues alongside Prince, B.B. King, The Roots, Dave Matthews Band and Al Green. Her alternative R&B soul-style is inspired by her musical heroines: Jill Scott, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Sade and Mary J. Blige. “My strongest connection musically is with Chaka Khan and Tina Turner.  Like me, there is a truth and power behind their voices and a rawness that resonates in me.” She is currently working on a follow-up album to the much highly acclaimed album “Embrace Me”.
Denver Soul, R&B and Gospel artist Jonathan Bryant’s reputation as a dynamic performer is firmly established in Colorado‘s music scene. Having appeared recently with India Arie, Philip Bailey, Dianne Reeves, Pam Grier, Don Cheadle, and as one of Kim Burrell’s background vocalists, Jonathan’s is a fresh and distinctive voice. Jonathan’s subtly intense, lyrical song-stylings have elicited comparisons to Usher, Bilal, and Lloyd. But to relegate him to a list of his contemporaries is to neglect the substance beneath his alluring sound, which harkens back to the style and class of Nat King Cole, Donny Hathaway’s passion, Stevie Wonder’s virtuosity and James Brown’s fiercely funky drive. On the heels of his 2007 self-published EP, The JB Project, Jonathan is currently working towards completion of his first full-length solo project with a release date slated for later this year.
During the multi-day celebration, festival attendees will experience live performances from across the spectrum of sounds that share soul music origins: Rhythm & Blues, conscious Hip Hop, Alternative Rock, Blues, Neo-Soul, poetry and Spoken Word. In addition to live music performances, Vail Soul Music Fest offers educational forums, fitness and outdoor activities, inspirational seminars, and celebratory soirées.
“Vail Soul Music Fest has something for everyone,” says Jackson. “Soul music is a staple in our society, from classic R&B to conscious hip-hop and we look forward to bringing this diverse genre of music to Vail.”
Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater will host the main stage of live performances during this first edition of Vail Soul Music Fest. Vail Plaza Hotel has also signed on as the official host hotel for the Fest weekend.
The festival estimates 3,000 attendees during the three-day event, which festival supporters expect will have a significantly positive impact on Vail’s economy and increase awareness surrounding summer tourism to the town of Vail. The Vail Soul Fest committee is in the process of securing relationships with many other Vail partners, to ensure that local business-owners fully benefit from this new event. Kelli McDonald, Vail's Economic Development Manager, is looking forward to this new event, "The Town of Vail has been looking for an event to fill the late August time period when business typically slows down.  The addition of Vail Soul Fest to the summer event calendar will surely bring economic vitality.”
