The summer is waning but the cooler mornings make for crisp air and bright colors. Join guides from the Vail Nature Center, operated by Walking Mountains Science Center, as they take hikers on tours of the Eagle Valley’s most prime fall color locations. On Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout October, hikers can be picked up throughout the Vail area and led on guided tours where they learn about the local ecology and history of the Eagle Valley. The summer hiking season, running through the end of September, will continue to offer full-day hikes on Tuesdays and Fridays and half-day excursions on Saturdays near some of the same trails that will be blazing orange come October.

The Aspen may have benefitted from our wet summer as much as our downriver neighbors and we may be rewarded with world class opportunities for photos and memories. Because the tree’s leaves don’t change color based on the cooling weather but rather the amount of daylight received (or day length), they’ve handpicked trails to correspond with peak color! Pack your water, camera, and don’t forget your sense of wonder for this once in a lifetime opportunity to witness one of nature’s most transformative displays while being fully immersed in its grandeur.

Walking Mountains Science Center also offers hiking club memberships. Join for the rest of September and hike with them until the end of October! Contact Peter Suneson, peters@walkingmountains.org, 970-827-9725 ex 128, for information and an application. View the full list of hikes by visiting www.walkingmountains.org/hike. New this season you can check their wildflower guide for weekly updates and the latest information on what’s on the trail and where the flowers are blooming by visiting www.walkingmountains.org/wildflower.
